Gabriel – We must remain calm

Wednesday, September 30th, 2015

Gabriel says Arsenal must stay calm after their shock Champions League defeat to Olympiacos.

The Gunners had won their previous two matches – at Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City – before Tuesday night’s game at Emirates Stadium.

Arsène Wenger’s side host Manchester United on Sunday, and Gabriel says that the team must remain confident ahead of the match.

We only have ourselves to blame for conceding them and now we have to rest, work harder, and then on Sunday come back and have a good game

Gabriel

“It was a complicated night [against Olympiacos],” he said. “We were in a good place in the first half, defending well, we were happy. But the three goals were our own fault.

“We only have ourselves to blame for conceding them and now we have to rest, work harder, and then on Sunday come back and have a good game.

“We just need to be calm. We have to work hard and focus on putting in a good performance [against Manchester United].

“I am sad that we lost an important game at home. But we can still qualify. We have a very strong team, with some very good players. We now have to try to win the remaining matches in the group.”

Pellegrini delighted with "strong reaction"

Wednesday, September 30th, 2015

Manuel Pellegrini praised his side’s response to falling behind after their dramatic victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Trailing Lars Stindl’s 53rd-minute strike, City left it late to emerge victorious in Germany, and although the Blues’ boss wasn’t entirely pleased, he admired his side’s resilience in the final stages.

He admitted: “It was a strange game. With 65 minutes played, both teams had chances to score. After that, we really dominated and made chances.

“They played better than us, especially defensively because we didn’t defend well but after that, we had a strong reaction for the last 30 minutes and finally we won the game. I must say Borussia played very, very well.

“We knew before the game they’re a very fast team and they’re able to recover metres between midfield and their box.

“Joe Hart made brilliant saves but we also had chances that we didn’t score. Maybe after 65 minutes, Borussia could have been winning 3-2, or it could have been 3-3 or 4-4. There were so many chances.

“We had a bit of luck to win the game. Against Juventus and West Ham we didn’t deserve to lose and maybe today, we didn’t deserve to win but we did.”

Hart produced a Man of the Match performance to thwart the hosts on a number of occasions, keeping City in the game. Without the shot-stopper’s inspired display, the Blues could easily have found themselves two or three goals down with little chance of recovering.

Like his manager, the England goalkeeper admitted the Blues’ performance could have been better but typically modest, refused to take any acclaim.

“We didn’t play well today,” said Hart. “We were really disjointed. Today, like in the past couple of Premier League games, we had a good half and a bad half.

“I think we deserved to win. They made more of their chances, making me work, but we had some really good chances, too.

“They’ve got some good movement – Kevin De Bruyne warned us about them. They’ve a very fit team and if anything, they work themselves into the ground.

“We profited when they were a little bit tired at the end. They made a few mistakes and we kept our quality.

“We left it late but Kun’s a cool guy and no matter whether he’s in form or not, he will score.”

On the subject of his crucial penalty save, Hart reserved praise for the staff behind the scenes, asserting practice makes perfect.

He smiled: “We work hard. We’ve got a lot of really good guys in the analysis department. No stone is unturned with us – I’ve seen a lot of penalties by a lot of players and I was ready for it.”

On the Blues’ chances of progression, he laughed at the suggestion City always do things the hard way. He declared: “If you speak to our fans, it’s the way we do things! It’s something we need to change but when we get results like that, it’s worth it.

“We’re not really happy with the performance but winning puts us in a good position.”

Borussia Monchengladbach 1-2 City

Wednesday, September 30th, 2015

City showed true grit and determination to come from a goal down and become the first English side to beat Borussia Monchengladbach on their own soil.

The Blues had the magnificent Joe Hart to thank for keeping in touch with a buoyant home side, with the City custodian saving a first-half penalty and making a string of superb saves before finally being beaten after the break, but goals from Nicolas Otamendi and a late winner from Sergio Aguero secured a dramatic 2-1 win for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

It wasn’t pretty but it was effective and what had looked like another disappointing night in Europe for City turned into anything but.

With the Borussia hosting their first Champions League tie in 37 years, there was a carnival atmosphere inside the capacity Borussia Park stadium as the sides walked out

…BMG 1 City 2…

Both teams had lost their opening group game and came into the match with mixed form in recent weeks. The Germans, rejuvenated under caretaker boss Andre Schubert who took command after his predecessor had suffered six straight losses, had won their last two league games while City’s recent hiccup included three losses out of four.

David Silva and Yaya Toure passed late fitness tests to bolster an injury-hit Blues but there was still seven recognised first-team players missing from the starting line-up.

City began confidently and almost opened up Monchengladbach with the first attack of any note on five minutes when Aleks Kolarov played a fine ball inside the full-back for Raheem Sterling who, in turn, slid the ball across the six-yard box to Aguero but his sliding shot was straight at the keeper and the chance was gone.

Borussia were playing good, incisive football and there was more than a hint of danger when Hermann broke clear on the right but he dragged a low shot wide.

It was a warning that went unheeded as Borussia continued to cause problems and when Raffael went down after appearing to catch the boot of a floored Otamendi, the referee awarded a penalty.

The last time Hart faced a Champions League spot-kick, he denied Lionel Messi from 12 yards – and the result was the same here, as Raffael’s low shot was expertly palmed away by a man who never disappoints on the big stage.

Not satisfied with keeping his team level, he then gobbled up the resulting corner and sent an inch-perfect 60-yard ball into the path of Aguero, but the slightly mis-firing Kun sent a low shot a few wide past the post.

Raffael and Hermann were then both denied in the space of a few minutes by superb Hart saves and Fernandinho’s untidy challenge in the box on Stindl could have easily resulted in another penalty as the Blues clung on at times in a see-saw game with neither defence looking particularly watertight.

With Yaya Toure’s hamstring problem appearing to resurface, the Ivorian was replaced by Fernando at the break

…BMG 1 City 2…

Hart was again called upon within a minute of the restart as Raffael – again – broke clear on the right yet again but the City and England No.1 beat away his curling drive to further frustrate the home crowd – but seven minutes later, they were finally on their feet celebrating.

Another dangerous foray forward by Borussia saw City stretched but this time the delivery was executed with precision as Lars Stindl arrived unmarked and buried a low drive that even Hart couldn’t stop.

City looked punch-drunk and if this were a boxing match, the Blues would have been staggering on their feet, but like all good prize fighters, they were still in the bout and on 67 minutes, parity was restored.

Martin Demichelis connected with a cross from close range and though his kneed shot was clearly over the line, the ball was hacked to the edge of the box where Otamendi’s shot was deflected into the net for his first City goal.

It was just what the doctor ordered and suddenly, there was belief again and Pellegrini’s men had gone from one extreme to the other, dominating the latter stages as they went for broke.

Aguero, Fernandinho and sub Jesus Navas all seeing efforts either go narrowly wide or blocked as this breathless affair edged towards its climax.

And in the dying seconds, City snatched victory. A cross into the box found Aguero who controlled the ball, nudged it forward and was brought down by Johnson giving the referee an easy decision to point to the spot. Aguero kept his cool and sent Sommer the wrong way to wrap up what had, at one stage, looked an unlikely victory.

The Blues had ridden their luck at times, but showed the kind of spirit that suggests this could be a huge result in the grand scheme of things.

Ruthless Celts delight Tommy McIntyre

Wednesday, September 30th, 2015

CELTIC Academy coach Tommy McIntyre has praised his ruthless young Celts for their attitude and application in their 5-0 hammering of HJK Helsinki in the first-leg of their UEFA Youth League qualifier tonight (Wednesday).

The Bhoys’ Under 19 squad thrashed their Finnish counterparts at the Sonera Stadium in Helsinki with a five minute scoring spree in the first-half establishing their dominance before a further two strikes in the second-half sealed the win.

Regan Hendry’s pin-point volley just after the half-hour mark opened the floodgates and was followed by Aidan Nesbitt’s sensational effort from 20 yards which put the Hoops 2-0 up just minutes later.

Calvin Miller made it 3-0 after winning the ball in HJK territory and supplying a composed finish to his good run before Nesbitt’s second-half brace saw the playmaker walk away with the match ball.

The result put the tie firmly in the Celts’ favour ahead of next month’s second-leg at the Almondvale Stadium in Livingston and McIntyre praised his side for sticking to the game plan and earning the five star victory.

“To be respectful to the opposition, I thought they started at a good tempo for the first 10 to 15 minutes, but without giving us many problems,” he said.

“Once we got into the game and started to take the ball for a period of time we controlled the game and the tempo and after that I felt it was a bit easier for us but we worked hard for it. They made us work really hard so the effort from the players, the way they applied themselves, their belief and energy levels were excellent.

“They deserved it and I thought they played really well. It’s only the first leg but we had a game plan, which they stuck to and got their rewards. I thought the goals we excellent.

“When you want to play in a certain manner and when the players see the reaction you get when it’s successful, it makes it easier. That takes us back to the importance of the education and development gained from these games.

“They stuck to the task well.”

Celtic’s first-half dominance gave the Bhoys the platform to play their unique brand of passing, attacking football against HJK, and despite being so far ahead at the interval they relentlessly sought more goals to add to their 3-0 lead.

Nesbitt’s second-half double, completed with a sumptuous lob over the HJK keeper on the 66th minute, finished the rout of the home side and the Academy coach praised his players’ hunger for more goals.

“Some of the passages of play for the goals were great and we can take a lot from them but as a coach it’s good for us to see that and for the players to get that success,” he added.

“I thought we were ruthless in that period and we could have scored another one. Sometimes it’s easy to take your foot off the pedal a bit but the players were very professional, focused and stuck to their tasks.”

Manchester United rally to beat Wolfsburg and get off mark in Champions League

Wednesday, September 30th, 2015

Juan Mata was the star of the show as Manchester United got off the mark in the Champions League with a narrow win over Wolfsburg.

Daniel Caligiuri took advantage of some slack defending from the hosts to put Wolfsburg ahead in the fourth minute, but Mata won – and converted – a penalty to equalise 11 minutes before the break.

The Spaniard then backheeled a lovely pass straight into Chris Smalling’s path and he slotted the ball past Diego Benaglio to give United a 2-1 win.

United looked anything but potential Champions League winners – as Bastian Schweinsteiger claimed they were on the eve of the match – but Louis van Gaal will not be too perturbed.

After losing their first Group B match to PSV earlier this month, the United boss knew this was a must-win encounter and he will be glad his team just about dragged themselves over the line against a disciplined and threatening German opponent.

After a wobbly start, United are now second in their group, level on three points with Wolfsburg, PSV and CSKA Moscow.

United attacked with intent from the off, but the hosts were stunned in the fourth minute when Wolfsburg took the lead.

Smalling, Morgan Schneiderlin and Daley Blind failed to dispossess Caligiuri in the right corner. He played the ball inside to Max Kruse, who returned the ball to the midfielder in the box and he jabbed the ball past David de Gea. The goal would not have stood had Antonio Valencia been in line with his fellow defenders.

United looked for an immediate reply, but struggled to find one. Dante flung himself into the path of a Mata curler and diverted the goal-bound shot over the bar.

Anthony Martial shrugged off his marker and negotiated his way past another before rifling a shot just wide.

Matteo Darmian put in a crucial block deep inside the home box and United immediately went on the counter. Martial turned his marker and squared to the unmarked Wayne Rooney but he planted the ball into the crowd.

Finally the nerves eased inside Old Trafford when Mata cut in from the right and swung in a cross which was impeded by Caligiuri’s outstretched left arm.

Referee Viktor Kassai pointed to the spot and Mata slotted the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

United had more composure about them in defence after Ashley Young came on for Valencia at half-time.

Wolfsburg looked for another early goal, but luckily for United, Darmian was on hand to deny Bas Dost an easy tap in.

United then put themselves in charge of the game in the 53rd minute. Smalling rolled the ball past Wolfsburg goalkeeper Benaglio, but Mata should take the lion’s share of the credit for the goal. The Spaniard flicked a wayward pass over the Wolfsburg back four and into Smalling’s path. The defender slid in and guided the ball past Benaglio with his right foot.

Caligiuri tested De Gea with a low shot as Wolfsburg looked for an equaliser. Nicklas Bendtner and Andre Schurrle came off the bench to add to the Germans’ attacking threat.

The former Arsenal striker fluffed a good chance just after entering the pitch and Wolfsburg continued to apply pressure, but United hung on for their first Champions League win under Van Gaal.

STAR PLAYER

Juan Mata: Anthony Martial once again produced some eye-catching moments in attack, but Mata was United’s real stand-out performer. Caused frequent problems for the Wolfsburg defence after the visitors’ early goal, both won and scored the equalising penalty, and teed up Chris Smalling’s winner with a delightful flick.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Daniel Caligiuri’s handball: Although they had shown some threat, things were still looking very nervy for United when Caligiuri blocked the ball with his arm, prompting the referee to award the spot-kick through which they got back on level terms. Had they not had that slice of luck and instead fallen 2-0 behind, one wonders if the Red Devils would have been able to turn the game around against this confident-looking Wolfsburg side.

VIEW FROM THE BENCH

Given how things looked early on, with the hosts 1-0 down and the prospect of a second straight Group B defeat appearing a very real possibility, as well as the way they were hanging on a bit towards the end, United boss Louis van Gaal may well feel some relief at the outcome. His side played well enough at times in claiming a fourth straight victory in all competitions, but certainly this is still not the ruthless United of old. Meanwhile, opposite number Dieter Hecking will only be disappointed that a very creditable away performance from his men could not yield anything.

MOAN OF THE MATCH

United ultimately got the job done, getting off the mark in the group with their first win – but the manner in which they saw the result out highlighted that the points had been claimed in somewhat unconvincing style.

WHO’S UP NEXT

Arsenal v Manchester United (Premier League, Sunday 4 October)

Borussia Monchengladbach v Wolfsburg (Bundesliga, Saturday 3 October)

Louis van Gaal thought his side created plenty of chances to draw level in the first half but were ultimately rewarded by fortune.

“It was very difficult because in the fourth minute, they already scored,” the Dutchman told BT Sport Europe.

” We created a lot of chances but we didn’t finish it. It was a lucky penalty, I think, of course it is a penalty but there are also referees who are not whistling for that. Then it is 1-1.

“But we created much more chances. Rooney and Depay could have scored also in the first half and then you finish the game.”

Van Gaal seemed to acknowledge his Red Devils side made life difficult for themselves in the second half, despite sealing victory thanks to Chris Smalling.

” Then we have to continue, of course,” he added. “Okay, we score at once but after that it was suffering. A lot of players are very tired because of the cumulation of a lot of matches but still, we didn’t give much away.

“How many chances have we given away? Maybe the once chance. But the rest of the chances were threats and we defended (against that).

“But we have to keep the ball better in the second half because that was our problem.”

Juan Mata was the surprise penalty-taker for United, replacing Wayne Rooney.

The Spaniard, who won the spot-kick, said: “The manager made a list of penalty takers and I am the first right now, so I have confidence.”

Match-winner Smalling added: “We started off sloppy and with that goal you give yourself a big battle to get back into the game, but after that we created a lot of chances and I think it was a deserved victory.”

Monaco v Spurs – betting preview with Marathonbet

Wednesday, September 30th, 2015

Harry Kane opened his 2015-16 goalscoring account for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in Saturday’s eye-catching 4-1 win over Manchester City in the Premier League and he’s 34/5 to score first against Monaco and continue where he left off at the weekend.

Kane is also 51/20 to score anytime against the Ligue 1 side, but Monaco themselves have plenty of firepower – particularly teenage midfielder Thomas Lemar, who has scored three times in the French league already this season and is 33/5 to score anytime against the North Londoners.

Back to Spurs and Eric Dier, who has started every match in every competition in a defensive midfield role so far this term and netted his second goal of the campaign against City, is 25/1 to score first and 10/1 to score anytime.

Looking at the bigger picture, Spurs are 53/20 to beat Monaco, while they’re 6/1 to win and for both teams to score.

Marathonbet are also offering 74/25 for there to be over 3.5 goals in the match – something that could well be on the cards after Spurs’ aforementioned big win against City, with Monaco having netted three goals in each of their last two matches.

Commons: Celtic support can drive us on in Paradise

Wednesday, September 30th, 2015

KRIS Commons can sense the European anticipation rising as Celtic’s home UEFA Europa League campaign gets underway when Fenerbahce arrive in the East End of Glasgow.

The first Group A match at Celtic Park will play a crucial role in the outcome of the Hoops’ fortunes in the UEFA Europa League, and Commons hopes that Celtic will emerge from the Paradise tunnel tomorrow night (Thursday), with 12 men in their team thanks to the backing from the stands.

He said: “In Europe the home games are vitally important because at least you can travel away without too much pressure in trying to get results.

“Any European team will tell you how difficult it is to pick up points away from home, so for us it’s about using our strengths, which is obviously the way that we play and the fans that seem to give us that extra gear at home.

“It is important that we get off to a good start here. The fans can play a huge part in how we play and obviously in how the opponents play.

“It can be quite an intimidating atmosphere when it’s noisy but again that can flip on its head if we’re not quite at the races.

“We do all our work in preparation to emphasise our game-plan and then hopefully we can use the supporters as the 12th man.”

Both teams go into the match on the back of contrasting results and performances on matchday one of the Europa League group stages, with Celtic unlucky to come away from Amsterdam with only a single point against Ajax, while eyebrows were raised when the news came through that Fenerbahce had lost 3-1 to Norwegian side, Molde, in Istanbul.

Commons said: “It came as a surprise but it just shows you that if a team puts their mind to it, they can go and get a result away from home.

“We weren’t too far away from getting a really good away result against Ajax but, again, it shows you the difficulty of trying to pick up points away from home, so there’s a big emphasis on ourselves tomorrow night.”

Aidan Nesbitt the hat-trick hero as Celts U19s hammer HJK Helsinki

Wednesday, September 30th, 2015

UEFA Youth League qualifier first round, first-leg
Sonera Stadium, Helsinki, Finland
Wednesday, September 30, 2015

HJK HELSINKI U19…0

CELTIC U19…5

(Hendry 32, Nesbitt 35, 53, 66, Miller 37)

A FIRST-HALF scoring spree from Celtic’s attacking players gave the Bhoys’ Under 19 squad a solid victory over HJK Helsinki in the first-leg of their UEFA Youth League first round qualifier in Finland.

A scintillating five minute spell from Tommy McIntyre’s side half an hour into the game saw strikes from Regan Hendry, Aidan Nesbitt and Calvin Miller all find the back of net to assert the Celts’ ’ dominance in the match and the tie overall.

A double from Nesbitt within 20 minutes of the restart then gave the Hoops playmaker a well-earned hat-trick and his side complete control going into next month’s second-leg at the Almondvale Stadium in Livingston.

Celtic started the match with an attack-minded line-up, spearheaded by Miller in the lone strike role, and they took the game to the hosts from (Free bet) Kick-off.

High pressing from the Hoops’ attacking line pinned the home team back inside the first 10 minutes and Theo Archibald forced the first corner of the match with a stinging left-footed shot from distance before Nesbitt also tried his luck from 20 yards.

The Celts were well in control and passed the ball with direction and creativity but HJK looked happy to soak up pressure and hit on the break.

The Finnish side were forced into an early substitution after Kalle Salmi replaced Joachim Bockerman mid-way through the first-half after the full-back failed to recover from a head knock he took while blocking a cross from Archibald.

As the hosts readjusted Celtic continued to press forward and their attacking efforts finally paid off just after the half-hour mark when they deservedly took the lead through Hendry. The winger’s accurate finish from inside the box after poor defending from HJK was well struck and found the back of the net to open the floodgates for the Bhoys on 32 minutes.

Nesbitt then doubled Celtic’s lead when he controlled a high ball with his right foot 25 yards out and knocked it over his marker with one touch before curling in a sumptuous volley from outside the box with his back partially to goal with his second.

It was a stunning finish from the Hoops playmaker but the pressure didn’t stop there and the Celts went 3-0 up straight from the restart after great pressing from Miller won the ball in midfield and raced in on goal to slot low under the HJK keeper to make it 3-0.

It was a scintillating five minute spell from Tommy McIntyre’s side and gave them a solid lead at the interval.

HJK remerged for the second-half determined to restore their pride but Celtic we clearly a class above the home team and reasserted their dominance quickly. And it wasn’t long before their control of possession reaped more goals with Nesbitt netting his second of the match on 53 minutes.

The winger gathered the ball outside the box and danced his way inside, avoiding a strong challenge before placing a powerful shot into the far corner of the net to make it 4-0 to the Celts.

McIntyre’s Bhoys continued to push forward with Nesbitt proving a constant menace to the home team’s defence and his efforts paid off again when he bagged his third of the match.

High pressing from the Celts once more won the ball deep in HJK territory, allowing Nesbitt to run at the Finnish team’s defence. His pace took him beyond his markers and gave him time to send a well-placed lob over Tomi Mikkelsson to seal his hat-trick.

The home side had a brief rally afterwards, forcing Colin McCabe into a good save from Omar Jama’s shot but it was the first time the keeper was called into action and he pushed the shot wide comfortably.

As the game approached its conclusion Nesbitt was replaced by Innes Murray, with the attacker going off to round of applause from the home fans.

Celtic maintained their superiority as the clock ticked down and defended a pair of late corners from HJK before the referee signalled the end of the game and a truly dominant performance from the Young Hoops.
