Demichelis up for the cup

Monday, November 30th, 2015

Martin Demichelis says that City know what they have to do to progress into the Capital One Cup semi-final.

City entertain Hull at the Etihad Stadium and the Argentine centre back is planning to use last year’s early exit as motivation this time around.

“We have the experience in the last couple of seasons where we have been knocked out here in cup games,” said Demichelis.

“One of my best memories at City is the Capital One Cup final at Wembley. Last year we experienced the opposite to be knocked out at home.

“We have the memory of that and now we want to prepare to win the game against Hull and go through to the semi-final.”

The centre back was also full of praise for his fellow countryman Willy Caballero after he stepped into the fold following Joe Hart’s injury.

“Today (Saturday) I think he had a really good game, he made some good saves when the game was still open,” Martin declared.

“It’s not easy to play once every three months and you lose momentum so it’s a difficult position. He played amazing and made some important saves for the team.”

Manager Manuel Pellegrini is also keen for his team to continue their return to winning ways against the Tigers, adding: “It is important to be focused now and to be focusing game by game. Maybe teams that are out of some competitions or the Capital One Cup might find it easier to play the Premier League but it is my way of thinking that we always want to continue in all the competitions.

“We will see with the medical staff which players are available and who are not. Maybe we will make some changes, but not so many as Zabaleta, Kompany, Mangala and Nasri are all out for definite.”

Boro U21s 1-2 Spurs – Ugo's verdict

Monday, November 30th, 2015

Trailing early against a Boro side that had lost just once all season, goals from Shaq Coulthirst (58 minutes) and Anton Walkes (80) completed the turn around in the second half.

Walkes converted smartly from Andros Townsend’s cross for his third goal in his last four league games to stretch the team’s unbeaten run to five (four wins) in the Barclays U21 Premier League.

“This was always going to be a real footballing test,” said coach Ugo. “We spoke about that at the start. It was a bread and butter day, away from home after a six-hour coach trip and overnight stay, pouring rain, tough playing conditions and I thought we showed a lot of bravery on the ball to probe away and keep possession.

“We recovered well after going a goal down against the run of play. The players continue to make good strides. Our mentality is getting stronger and we’re getting harder to beat.

Below: Anton Walkes celebrates the winner at Middlesbrough

“Anton gave himself a chance because he keeps arriving in the box and if you keep doing that and keep having attempts at goal eventually one will fall for you.

“Andros’ contribution was excellent, always occupying two or three of their players and his attitude was first-class. Milos handled himself well again, another captain’s performance. Luke Amos was outstanding, playing out of position again, he has our trust and he should be proud of that, he has the attributes to deal with it. Anthony Georgiou’s contribution was very good as well.

“We know there are things to work on but we keep churning out results, performances and keep applying ourselves. We’ve got the work ethic and the job description basics, we’ve got all that, now we’re adding the icing on the cake, the polish in the final third that makes a huge difference.”
