MCWFC: Five of the best games

Sunday, March 13th, 2016

With less than seven days to go to the start of Manchester City Women’s new season, we look back on some of the best games at the Academy Stadium…

City 3-1 Doncaster Belles, 22 March 2015

[embedded content]

The first competitive game to be played at the Academy Stadium following the Club’s move there in December 2014, City progressed in the FA Women’s Cup with a 3-1 win against Doncaster.

After a busy summer of recruitment it was all eyes on the first competitive team sheet of the new year, and boss Nick Cushing opted to name four of his new signings in the starting XI.

Jennifer Beattie, Demi Stokes, Nikita Parris and Sarah Wiltshire were all included, while Toni Duggan was fit enough to be named on the bench. Jill Scott wore the captain’s armband in the absence of the injured Steph Houghton.

A debut brace for Parris and a stoppage time strike from Duggan on her return from injury were enough to see off the Belles, and secure a coveted place in the next round of the competition.

City 1-0 Birmingham City, 12 July 2015

England’s performance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada inspired many and that was clear to show in the numbers that were in attendance for the first game back at the Academy Stadium.

Birmingham were the opponents for the WSL clash and a record-breaking 2,102 vocal supporters turned out to welcome eight of the Lionesses squad, five of them City players.

Karen Bardsley, Houghton, Lucy Bronze, Scott and Duggan all started for the hosts, while Jade Moore captained the visitors and Karen Carney and Jo Potter emerged from the sidelines after the break.

And it was Duggan who secured the three points for City in the second half to move them up to fifth in the FAWSL 1 table.

City 5-0 Durham, 29 July 2015

[embedded content]

City welcomed Durham on a warm night in Manchester for the second Continental Cup game and secured their highest victory in the competition to date in a 5-0 rout.

On a comfortable night at the Academy Stadium, Cushing’s side produced a thoroughly dominant and professional display, peppering the visitors’ goal with efforts as the away side struggled to venture out of their own half.

Braces from Krystle Johnston and Parris plus a goal from Izzy Christiansen secured the victory as the Blues continued their 100% record since the season restarted after the World Cup.

City 6-1 Bristol Academy, 27 September 2015

Cushing’s side notched their highest number of goals in a game on a sunny afternoon at the Academy Stadium back in September.

A brace from Christansen plus goals from Scott, Bronze, Parris and Georgia Stanway ensured the Blues leapfrogged Chelsea to the summit – before the Londoners regained top spot with victory at Liverpool later in the evening.

The win ensured that the title race would go down to the final game of the season at home to Notts County, as well as keeping up City’s post-World Cup unbeaten record.

City 2-1 Notts County, 4 October 2015

[embedded content]

City set a new record attendance for one of their games at the Academy Stadium as a crowd of 3,180 were in attendance for the final game of the 2015 season.

The Blues and Chelsea were competing for the title and City came up just short, but Cushing’s side signed off the season in style with their ninth win in ten league matches to secure a place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the 2016 campaign.

Parris opened the scoring in front of a vocal crowd before Rachel Williams levelled the scores for the away side. Christiansen then added City’s second to restore the lead and it the scoreline remained the same until the final whistle was blown.

However, Chelsea’s win at home to Sunderland meant that City would end the season in second place, but there were plenty of positives heading into the next campaign.

In Focus: Dynamo Kyiv's last game

Sunday, March 13th, 2016

City welcome Dynamo Kyiv to the Etihad on Tuesday for the second leg of the Round of 16 tie…

Manuel Pellegrini’s men have a 3-1 advantage from the first leg in Ukraine and will be looking to secure a place in the Champions League quarter final for the first time come 10pm Tuesday.

Here’s a quick look at how Kyiv fared over the weekend…

Karpaty 1 Dynamo Kyiv 2, 11 March 2016

How did they line up?

Head Coach Serhiy Rebrov made three changes from the defeat against City with Vitorino Antunes, Miguel Veloso and Oleh Husyev coming in for Danilo Silva, Serhiy Rybalka and Derlis Gonzalez.

Rebrov lined his side up in a 4-5-1 formation at the NSK Olimpiyskyi for the first leg and it was a similar situation when they took on Karpaty on Friday night.

Oleksandr Shovkovskiy started in net behind a back four of Domagoj Vida, Yevhen Khacheridi, Aleksandar Dragovic and Antunes.

Veloso anchored the midfield with Denys Garmash and Vitaliy Buyalskyi playing slightly ahead of him in central midfield. Andriy Yarmolenko was deployed on the right while Husyev was out on the left.

Rebrov kept Lukasz Teodorczyk as the lone striker, the same position he played in the first leg.

How did the game pan out?

Kyiv headed into the game as joint leaders along with Shakhtah Donetsk and it was expected to be an easy victory over seventh place Karpaty, but it was far from it.

The home side took a shock lead in the 28th minute when Ambrosiy Chachua fired in from close range from a move that started on the edge of their own area.

The ball was worked out to Gegam Kadimyan and he picked out the run of Chachua, who slotted into the back of the net despite the best efforts of Shovkovskiy.

Karpaty held the lead until the 55th minute when Teodorczyk levelled from six yards out. Garmash showed good footwork to pick out the Polish striker and Kyiv’s number 91 notched the equaliser with a first time shot.

Boosted by the goal, Kyiv went on the hunt for a winner and found it just nine minutes later. Yarmolenko received the ball on the right hand side of the area, opened his body and fired a low shot into the bottom corner past the Roman Mysak to secure the three points.

Post-match reaction

Yarmolenko told the Kyiv website that it was the second half performance that inspired them to victory.

Pavlo Orikhovskiy, who made his debut for Kyiv as a second half substitute, described the win as: “We needed a victory. We tried to carry out the instructions of the coach, but at first it was hard.”

On This Day: 13 March

Sunday, March 13th, 2016

Join us as we take a look back to games and events from this date in City history…

1897

The first game to take place on 13 March throughout City history was 119 years ago when the Blues took on Leicester Fosse, the original name for Leicester City.

Billy Holmes and Billy Meredith were on target along with Billie Gillespie and Fred Williams to secure a 4-0 win for City.

1948

Up next is a trip down memory lane back to 1948 when City welcome Burnley to Maine Road for a Division One clash.

George Smith and Roy Clarke (pictured) notched a brace each as the Blues secured a 4-1 victory over the Clarets to move up to 11th in the league.

1982

34 years ago, John Bond took his City side to the City Ground to take on Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in Division One.

Tommy Caton put the Blues ahead on the stroke of half time and it looked like City would take all three points until a 90th minute Peter Ward penalty snatched the victory away.

2011

The latest game to be played on 13 March, City sealed a place in the FA Cup semi-final with a 1-0 win over Reading at the Etihad.

Roberto Mancini’s side had piled the pressure on throughout the game and it paid off in the 75th minute when Micah Richards nodded in the winner from David Silva’s corner.

The rest, as they say, is history as City went on to beat Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley before overcoming Stoke in the final to lift the FA Cup for the first time since 1969.

Press react to Norwich stalemate

Sunday, March 13th, 2016

There are a lot more pleasant tasks than going through the reaction from yesterday’s Premier League draw with Norwich.

But it has to be done.

You can read the official view here.

We start with the Manchester Evening News and their match report from the 0-0 draw at Carrow Road.

Rob Pollard writes: “City started the match superbly, dominating possession and moving the ball effectively.

“Sergio Aguero looked sharp and had a low shot saved superbly from John Ruddy, and David Silva, always the creator, was being kicked up and down as Norwich tried to contain him.

“Norwich were camped in their own half – an exercise in damage limitation.

He continued: “The Blues have a tendency, though, to take their foot off the accelerator and allow the opposition a foothold in the game – and that’s exactly what happened here.

“Aguero was causing problems, with his pace too much for the Norwich backline to handle, and City were seeing plenty of the ball in Norwich’s defensive third – but too often their final ball was letting them down.

“Ruddy wasn’t called into action anywhere near enough, despite his defence being sat worryingly deep for much of the game.”

Heading over to the Daily Mail now and, again, the Argentine striker is praised with Joe Bernstein summing up a frustrating afternoon in Norfolk.

He scribed: “Aguero had a stinging free-kick tipped over by Ruddy, who then palmed away another fierce effort from an acute angle.

“When Aguero charged towards the penalty area, Klose tripped him at exactly the right moment, just a couple of yards outside the box. Silva hit the free-kick into the wall.

“Every time Navas tried to cross, Olsson blocked. Every time Aguero attempted to interact with Wilfried Bony or Kelechi Iheanacho, Klose intercepted.”

The Telegraph has a similar though trail with Sergio’s performance analysed in nearly all of the news outlets this morning.

Gerry Cox stated: “Aguero tried his best though. He had a free-kick from 25 yards tipped over the bar brilliantly by John Ruddy in the opening stages, and then shot wide of the far post.

“Ruddy made another good save after half an hour when he dived full length to turn away a low shot from Aguero that was heading for the far corner of goal.”

And finally, to Goal and their match report from the 0-0 draw at Carrow Road for their take on John Ruddy’s key save to deny Aguero.

Stefan Coerts describes it as: “Aguero continued to be City’s main attacking threat in the first half, firing a free-kick from 20 yards out straight at Ruddy after 15 minutes, before shooting just wide shortly after.

“Ruddy then showed his class on the half-hour mark when Aguero unleashed a low shot from just inside the box, making a sublime one-handed save to deny the former Atletico Madrid man.”

Pellegrini refuses to give up on title

Saturday, March 12th, 2016

Manuel Pellegrini has admitted City’s goalless draw with Norwich is a setback but he insists his squad will continue to believe they can win the Premier League title.

The draw at Carrow Road means the Blues lie fourth in the Premier League, nine points behind leaders Leicester with only nine games to go. However, the Chilean has refused to rule out City’s title chances.

He said: “Of course we dropped two important points. My mind is always focused now to the next game and while it is mathematically possible we must try to do it.

“The only way forward is to think of the Champions League game on Tuesday and after that we play against Manchester United at home.

“We will try to get the three points and at the end of the season see which side has the most points but when you have so few games to play and you are losing points it is always difficult.”

City had over two thirds of the possession in the tie but struggled find a way past the stubborn Canaries defence. The Blues managed eight shots with the most notable moment coming as Sergio Aguero’s low drive forced an excellent John Ruddy save in the first half.

Pellegrini continued: “We dominated the game from the first minute to the end but we were not clear in the last third where we needed to create more space against a team that defended very well.

“Normally, we have a lot of possession and create a lot of chances in the last third but today we couldn’t do it. We played with great concentration and intensity but you need a little more if you want to score goals.

Hart: We weren't good enough

Saturday, March 12th, 2016

Joe Hart believes the title is still not beyond City, though the Blues’ quest became that much harder after the 0-0 draw with Norwich.

Hart was a virtual bystander throughout the 90 minutes as the hosts concentrated on keeping City out at the other end and the England keeper believes the Blues lacked invention and a creative spark.

“It was a disappointing performance,” said Hart. ”Myself and John Ruddy could have had the afternoon off.

“You have to give credit to Norwich for how they defended – they defended in numbers and made a few changes which worked for them, but I’m not really bothered about Norwich, it’s about what we do and we weren’t really good enough to win the game if I’m honest.”

City could trail leaders Leicester by 15 points by the time the Manchester derby kicks off next weekend should the Foxes win their two matches in the interim.

But Hart believes history has shown that the title race isn’t over until it is mathematically impossible and says the Blues won’t give up in their quest to win the Premier League this season.

“We’ll keep going because that’s the spirit we have here and have had since I first arrived, but sometimes it’s not good enough.

“We needed more invention, more brilliance and we relied a bit too much on that today and it wasn’t available.

“It chops and changes at the top and we have to stay consistent and true to our belief that we can still win the league, but we now turn our attention to the Champions League and then the Manchester derby after that.”

City 1-1 Sunderland

Saturday, March 12th, 2016

Aleix Garcia’s second half goal ensured that City EDS would share the points with Sunderland U21s at the Academy Stadium.

The 18-year old fired City level five minutes after the restart to make it 1-1 and cancel out Mikael Mandron’s 12th minute opener.

Simon Davies made three changes from the side that beat Norwich with Cameron Humphreys, Aleix Garcia and Bersant Celina coming in for George Glendon, Rodney Kongolo and David Faupala.

The young Blues created the first chance of the game with six minutes played when Garcia picked out the run of Isaac Buckley with a 30-yard pass.

The 17-year old controlled the ball before releasing the overlapping Celina, who saw his low shot palmed away by Maksymilian Stryjek.

The next chance in the game fell to the away side and they took it with Mandron finding space in the area before firing past the outstretched hand of Angus Gunn in the City goal.

Davies’ side responded well to going behind and could have been level within six minutes. Captain Kean Bryan drove towards goal before unleashing a 25-yard thunderbolt that troubled Stryjek.

Both teams were involved in a midfield battle following the early flurry of chances as both sides cancelled each other out to and the Black Cats heading into half time in the lead.

City came out of the blocks firing after the restart and drew themselves level in the 50th minute.

Sunderland failed to clear their lines and the ball fell to Garcia on the edge of the area, who sent a low driven effort into the back of the net with his first touch.

Following the goal, another midfield battle ensued as both sides looked to find their second goal of the afternoon.

Davies made his one and only chance in the 72nd minute when Faupala was brought on to replace Humphreys, which saw City move to a 4-4-2 formation.

The change almost brought a winner for City as the young French striker turned his man on the edge of the area before seeing his shot blocked by a last ditch challenge from Thomas Beadling.

Four minutes of added time were indicated at the end of the second half and both sides saw it out to share the points.
