Kolo Toure: Europa League can save Liverpool's season

Monday, February 29th, 2016

Liverpool defender Kolo Toure hopes the Europa League can save their season after an agonising penalty shoot-out defeat in the Capital One Cup final left them with little else to play for.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are nine points off fourth place in the Barclays Premier League – although Wednesday’s match at home to Wembley conquerors Manchester City offers a chance to reduce that – and Champions League qualification via that route looks highly unlikely.

So the main priority now is trying to qualify for the premier European club competition by winning the Europa League.

They will have to get past arch-rivals Manchester United, whom they have drawn for the first time in Europe, in the last 16 but Toure believes it is the only way to salvage a campaign which has occasionally promised success but ultimately failed to deliver.

“Winning the Europa League can save the season and the Premier League is not done yet,” said the centre-back.

“Of course we have plenty of games coming. We have another Premier League game which is very important. We need to digest this loss and then focus for the game because it will be tough.

“We can get three points against City. The final showed both sides can win.”

Defeat to City was Liverpool’s third in succession at Wembley, having lost the 2012 FA Cup final to Chelsea and then last season’s semi-final to a struggling Aston Villa side.

Toure was an unused substitute last April but he at least came off the bench against former club City after a clash of heads forced Mamadou Sakho off after 25 minutes.

While he may not be around to make amends – the 34-year-old defender’s contract expires in the summer – he believes Klopp’s squad of younger players can benefit.

“You have to learn to lose sometimes before you win,” he added.

“We will learn as a team together to lose and we hope we can win next time.”

Captain Jordan Henderson has backed the players to bounce back immediately at Anfield and exact some sort of revenge on Manuel Pellegrini’s side in midweek.

“You have to try to take positives from it and learn from these experiences,” he said.

“We had a situation against Chelsea after the cup final when we played them a few days later and played very well (winning 4-1 at Anfield).

“We’ve got to do that again. Something similar would be nice, although it won’t make up for the disappointment.

“It is hard, it is difficult, but that is life and football and you have to deal with it as best you can.

“As a team we’ve great character and personality. You saw that on the pitch, so there won’t be a problem moving forward.

“I feel when we play to the level we are capable of we can beat everyone.

“We left everything on the field. We have to do the same until the end of the season and there could still be success for us.”

Rugby training paying off for Chelsea and boss Guus Hiddink

Monday, February 29th, 2016

Chelsea interim boss Guus Hiddink likes to see his players on the edge and says the club ‘needed a bit more rugby’ after replacing Jose Mourinho in December.

Hiddink was lauding the effect training in other sports can have on a squad after the former judo yellow-belt saw fellow Dutchman and judo enthusiast Louis van Gaal go to ground during Manchester United’s win over Arsenal on Sunday.

The United boss hit the deck with a dive as he remonstrated with fourth official Mike Dean over an on-field decision – and Hiddink said his compatriot’s history in judo would have helped him land unhurt.

“I saw it, you could see he had been educated also by his physical teacher, he is practising judo also by the way he fell down,” Hiddink said.

“It wasn’t very fluently the way he went down. I also had some judo so I’m able to do so as well.”

While Hiddink said he could have executed a similar fall, he insisted he would never follow his managerial rival in doing so – but did praise the effect judo training can have on a footballer – revealing he felt his Chelsea side were too much of a soft touch on his return as interim manager.

Asked if he still did any judo move, the 69-year-old replied: “No, but boxing with my partner! She wins. I’m not joking. You know at the end women are strong.

“I make a combination of handball and rugby, for warming up (his players). Because in rugby – I love to see rugby also – you are entitled, when one has the ball, to grab and make a wrestling move.

“Not punching them. It’s also mental part. If they are going into a fight, within the rules, transferred to football, you can gain a lot from other sports including rugby.”

When he was questioned on the strength of his Chelsea squad when he returned for his second spell, he said: “It needed a bit more rugby.

“We installed it at my team with PSV as well, with the youngsters’ education in the academy. We encouraged, we installed and we organised wrestling, because you need it when you are on the pitch.

“I don’t say you must be a wrestler on the pitch, but you have this physical contact. And if you do those exercises, you get very well the feeling of balance, how you can fight in duels. That is very important.”

Hiddink saw a training ground bust-up between Diego Costa and Oscar not long after his arrival – but given his background he was never worried it would affect the morale of his players.

“Yes, with respect,” he said when asked if he liked his players fighting.

“In the same second they knew, because they are friends, that they were threatening each other, and deep down asked ‘what are we doing?’

“I like when they go on the edge. Not fighting but resistance. The best players in the league are also strong players, you feel that. There are a lot of benefits to gather when you are well equipped with your balance and your physical fitness.”

“It’s not always you have to be a big, big guy but when I see for instance, you see it often in the defensive part of the game.

“For instance Willian is not a big guy but is fighting into duels defensively as well. He’s smart to do so and willing to do so. That’s the modern footballer.”

Hiddink will next be sending out his fighters at out-of-form Norwich on Tuesday night but will be without the injured John Terry and Pedro as hamstring problems keep both in the treatment room.

U-21s: Arsenal 1-1 Wolves – Report

Monday, February 29th, 2016

By Lloyd Webb at Meadow Park

Summary

Arsenal Under-21s extended their unbeaten run to six games with a 1-1 draw against Wolves on Monday night.

Donyell Malen put the hosts in front when he raced past his marker and planted a strike into the bottom corner.

The visitors hit back immediately and, following a goalmouth scramble, Tommy Rowe poked the ball into the back of the net.

Substitute Stephy Mavididi had a golden opportunity to snatch all three points late on but Jon Flatt palmed away to Krystian Bielik who rattled the crossbar which forced the home side to settle for a point.

Setting the scene

Steve Gatting made six changes to his side for the under-21s’ first game in just under a month.

O’Connor was back in the team after returning from his loan spell with York City, while Kaylen Hinds made his first start following a short lay-off.

Ryan Huddart replaced Matt Macey in goal, while Malen started in place of Mavididi.

First half

It took a while for Arsenal to find their rhythm but, after a quarter of an hour, Malen took matters into his own hands when he raced past his marker and rifled into the bottom corner.

Two minutes later, the visitors were back level when, after a scramble, the ball was poked home by Rowe.

The equalising goal seemed to stun the Gunners as opportunities were few and far between for the rest of the half, and while Nelson troubled from distance on two occasions it finished deadlocked at the break.

Second half

Arsenal were given an early warning when Liam McAlinden cut inside and hammered the ball inches wide of the post.

Chris Willock had the fans out their seats with some fine footwork moments later before his teasing cross was glanced wide by Malen.

Rowe was next to try his luck but he thundered his strike high and wide of the goal.

Bright Enobakhare then stretched his legs, beating Julio Pleguezuelo for pace before rattling the post from a tight angle.

The Gunners had a great opportunity to score a dramatic winner when Mavididi first forced Flatt into wonderful save before Bielik hit the crossbar.

City 2-0 Norwich City

City U18s sealed a place in the FA Youth Cup semi-final with a 2-0 win over Norwich City.

Goals from Brahim Diaz and Manu Garcia were enough to secure the win in front of a bumper crowd at the Academy Stadium.

Jason Wilcox’s side started on top and could have been ahead inside the opening minute. Isaac Buckley burst through the Norwich defence before seeing his shot well saved by Aston Oxborough.

City did have the ball in the net in the 12th minute but referee Darren England ruled it out as he adjudged Lukas Nmecha to have handled it in the build-up.

The young Blues didn’t have to wait long until they took the lead though with the opening goal coming seven minutes later.

Demeaco Duhaney picked out Brahim with a perfectly weighted cross field pass and the young Spaniard brought it down with one touch before firing past Oxborough for the first goal of the night.

It was nearly 2-0 shortly after but Buckley’s driven shot fizzed across the face of goal and narrowly wide of the upright.

Norwich looked to get back into the game as the half time whistled approach but City were able to repeatedly deny them and heading into the break with a one-goal advantage.

Manu Garcia tested Oxborough early on in the second half, forcing him into a smart save down to his right but the Norwich shot stopper couldn’t do anything to prevent Garcia getting on the score sheet in the 73rd minute.

The 18-year old drove towards the edge of the area before unleashing a ferocious strike from 20-yards out to leave Oxborough rooted to the spot.

Nmecha had a chance to give the young Blues a three-goal advantage only a minute later but Oxborough produced another good save to deny the England youth international.

Four minutes added time were indicated at the end of the second half and City saw them out to secure their place in the last four, where they will face either Liverpool or Arsenal over two legs.
