Chambers – I learn in the background

Sunday, January 31st, 2016

 By Lloyd Webb

Calum Chambers says he is developing as a player by learning from his team-mates in training.

The defender impressed in the FA Cup win against Burnley and scored the second goal of his career with a fantastic curling effort into the top corner.

Chambers has also adapted to a new midfield role this season and says he is working hard every day to improve.

I’m just concentrating on getting games and training hard and trying to get myself in the squad and the team. I’m just trying to make myself stronger and get nearer the team and things like that

Calum Chambers

“I want to be in the first team now,” he said. “I’m training as hard as I can and learning and you take it on the chin. I’m pleased with how things have gone.

“I’m learning in the background. I’m not playing as much and I’m getting on in a few games. I feel like I’m learning in training and watching players in my positions. I have started training in that holding midfield role and played a few games there which was enjoyable.

“I still see myself as centre back and maybe a holding central midfielder. It gives you an opportunity to play. If you are [able to play] in different positions it gives you more of a chance to play and having the knowledge where you want the ball in different positions.

“I’m just concentrating on getting games and training hard and trying to get myself in the squad and the team. I’m just trying to make myself stronger and get nearer the team and things like that. You can’t let yourself get frustrated and you have to remain focused. You have to keep your eye on the goal and concentrate on yourself.”

Where next for departing Chelsea captain John Terry?

Sunday, January 31st, 2016

Chelsea captain John Terry is set to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season after the club decided not to renew his contract.

The 35-year-old centre-back has made 696 appearances for the Blues, winning four Barclays Premier League titles.

Terry confirmed he would not play for another team in England, having spent his entire career at the west London club, joining when 14 years old.

Here, Press Association Sport takes at look at what could be the next move for the one-time England captain.

CHINA

As skipper of the Blues, Terry already has a strong following in Asia, having embarked on his own ‘Captain China Tour 2015′ last summer, and was named an ambassador of football culture by the Guangzhou Football Association. Two of Terry’s ex-managers are currently in charge of Chinese Super League clubs, with one-time England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson at Shanghai SIPG and Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari at Guangzhou Evergrande while Dan Petrescu, who played alongside the defender at Stamford Bridge, is in charge of Jiangsu Suning. Former Chelsea players Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka have both had spells in the cash-rich Chinese top flight, and Terry could fancy one final pay day in a region where he already enjoys superstar status.

THE UNITED STATES

Terry revealed in an interview at the end of 2015 he could see “maybe there is a time” when he would look to go to play in America, and Major League Soccer has been installed as the early bookmakers favourite for the defender’s next destination. Former Stamford Bridge team-mate Frank Lampard is currently playing with New York City FC , while Ashley Cole is another familiar face having joined Steven Gerrard, the ex-Liverpool and England midfielder, at the LA Galaxy. David Beckham is also ready to set up a new expansion franchise in Miami from 2018.

AUSTRALIA

Terry led Chelsea in a glamour friendly against Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium, which attracted a crowd of some 83,598, in June 2015. There would certainly be plenty of potential suitors to make the former England captain one of the A-League’s m arquee players, which this season include the likes of former Barcelona and Liverpool midfielder Luis Garcia at Central Coast Mariners.

John Terry: I'm leaving Chelsea in the summer

Sunday, January 31st, 2016

Chelsea captain John Terry has announced he will leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season after the club decided not to renew his contract.

The 35-year-old central defender has spent his entire career at Chelsea and last May won the Premier League title for the fourth time.

Terry was informed prior to last week’s win over Arsenal.

He said: “I was in last week before the Arsenal game and it (my contract) is not going to be extended.

“It’s not going to be a fairytale ending, I’m not going to retire at Chelsea.”

Chelsea have endured a season of struggle, with manager Jose Mourinho leaving for the second time in December, and now their talismanic skipper will be moving on.

There is one small glimmer of a playing future for Terry at Chelsea, if Mourinho’s permanent successor deems his services are required.

Terry added: “Ideally I would have loved to stay, but the club’s moving in a different direction.

“I needed to know now like I have done every January and sometimes it takes a couple of months to get done. Unfortunately, it was a no.

“They said that when the new manager comes in, things might change. It’s a no at the minute.

“It took me a couple of days to get over.”

Terry, who has made 696 appearances for Chelsea, has no plans to play for another English club, but his next destination is still to be determined.

He said: “I couldn’t play for another Premier League club. It will be elsewhere for sure.

“I don’t know where and I leave that to the people in charge.”

The former England captain, who joined Chelsea aged 14, added: “The club will move on. No player is ever bigger than the club.

“No doubt they’ll sign one or two great centre-backs.

“I want to come back as a Chelsea supporter in years to come with my kids and see the team doing great.

“Unfortunately that’s not going to be with me, but I want to see the team do well.

“It’s going to be my last year and I want to go out at the top.

“We spoke about my legacy and coming back to the club when I finish. The most important thing now is to get us up the league.”
