Hibernian have no major injury concerns for their clash with Championship leaders Rangers.

Left-back Adam Eckersley and striker Farid El Alagui are still working their way towards match fitness.

Nathan Oduwa will be fit for Rangers after returning from injury.

Kenny Miller did not take part in full training on Friday but he should travel, however both David Templeton and Cammy Bell both remain out with knee injuries.

Hibernian head coach Alan Stubbs:

“We invite Rangers to Easter Road and we are going to really test them. We are going to have a real good go at them.

“Whenever you play in any big game you should savour it, embrace it, and you obviously want to win the games.

“Whatever line of work you are in when the big challenges come around they give you a buzz.

“I’ve had the buzz since last Sunday waiting for this game and I am really looking forward to it. I hope it brings out the best in me as we want to get three points. I think we can get a result against Rangers, in fact, I know we can.”

Rangers manager Mark Warburton:

“Come 5pm Sunday, we are going to be five, eight or 11 points ahead of Hibs. That’s the simple facts.

“So from that point of view 11 points ahead can be regarded a dominant performance. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a very strong position. But we are only a third of the way through the season. There will still be 72 points to play for – that’s a lot of points.

“We’ve had a good start which we’re happy with but it’s still early days.”

Louis van Gaal admits he's at a loss about Manchester United's striking problems

Saturday, October 31st, 2015

Louis van Gaal has become concerned by Manchester United’s barren run and admits he is still to discover Anthony Martial’s best position.

United produced another predictable performance as they went a third fixture without scoring – their run includes a Capital One Cup defeat on penalties by Middlesbrough that went to extra-time – when they drew 0-0 in the Premier League at Crystal Palace.

The promising Martial, signed for a potential £58million towards the conclusion of the summer transfer window, was again restricted wide on the left, with Wayne Rooney again disappointing from a more central position and Van Gaal’s team – for all of their undoubted talent – again never looking likely to score.

On Tuesday they host CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, but despite the importance of the fixture amid wider concerns about Rooney’s stuttering form and the fact that Martial appears a genuine threat when playing as a striker, the manager is still undecided about where the Frenchman should play.

“Of course (I’m concerned),” he said. “But when you are not creating so many chances I cannot complain.

“After Middlesbrough (on Wednesday) we had created a lot of chances to finish, and then it is more concerning, but nevertheless today we had chances we could finish and then you win this game. That is our history until now, we have to improve that.

“It was obvious that Crystal Palace started very well, they won every second or third ball and kept the pressure on us. The chance Ander Herrera had in the first half, you have to finish. We didn’t finish that.

“In the second half, Palace were maybe more aggressive than the first half. We don’t develop our positional game and then you cannot create chances, you keep always the pressure on our goal.

“(But) I cannot see that (United’s players) are lacking confidence. When I see their characters I don’t think they doubt their quality. It can change in one match.

“We don’t know (Martial’s best position) yet because he played always in Monaco as a left winger; as manager I have to see what is the best balance in the team.

“That’s not so simple, so I have to decide every week dependable on the game plan and qualities of opponent, and so on. In Monaco he played more or less always on the left wing.”

Pardew, in criticising their willingness to “target” Yohan Cabaye, also appeared to acknowledge that the modern United have a far more negative approach than that which has previously brought them such success.

“(There were) eight fouls on him today, three or four tasty,” he said. “(He was) a target for United, they tried to slow him down

“Our senior players should have pointed that out (to the referee, Mike Jones). He s till had a very influential performance.

“(United’s style) is different, patient, but when they dominate possession they are looking for that moment, incision. That incision is what they lacked today.”

Wenger on the win, Koscielny and tempo

Saturday, October 31st, 2015

Arsène Wenger spoke to the media after Arsenal’s 3-0 win at Swansea City on Saturday. This is what he said:

on the performance…
It is always a difficult game, we were a bit edgy [in the first half] but in fairness Swansea showed quality again today. They are maybe going through a spell where they have less confidence but they are a good side. In the first half, it was difficult but in the second half we upped our purpose, our tempo and had more purpose in our passing, with pace in our combinations. Once we scored the first goal we were the dominant team and won the game normally.

on coming through a testing period…
We had a difficult first half but we came through it. I rested eight players on Wednesday and gave them a little breather this week, and it took us a little while to get into the tempo of the game. I am pleased because we could keep a clean sheet during the difficult moments of the game and you are never in a hurry to take too many risks going forward. Once we scored the first goal it was a completely different game.

on scoring more than 2,000 goals in his reign…
Yes, the three points are more important. I am proud of scoring goals because people like to come to see football to see people try to play, but the most important of course was the three points.

on Chelsea’s form…
I think it is better I don’t talk too much about that. Let’s focus on our game. We have made a little difference with some teams. Let’s focus on the quality of our game and keep a good balance between hunger, humility and confidence and not look too much at the other teams.

on Koscielny’s goal…
I didn’t see a foul, honestly. Maybe I missed something and I have to watch it again. There are always a diverse set of opinions from managers on that. It didn’t look obvious to me from outside.

on Monk saying Swansea gifted the win to Arsenal…
Honestly ion every goal you concede you have five mistakes on average. I didn’t look too much at them honestly when we scored the goals, I would have to see them again.

Otamendi: We deserved victory

Saturday, October 31st, 2015

Nicolas Otamendi celebrated his first City goal with another man-of-the-match display in the 2-1 win over Norwich.

The Argentine defender thought he’d scored in the 2-1 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach in September, only for officials to award the goal to Martin Demichelis.

But there was no doubt about this effort as the former Valencia defender powered a towering header home from a Kevin De Bruyne corner to put the Blues on the way to a hard-fought win over the Canaries.

“I’m really, really happy that we won this game and that we played well and obviously I’m really pleased I scored my first goal for City,” said Otamendi.

“I heard about the ‘fight to the end’ spirit we have here before I arrived, but in all honesty, it’s just a pleasure for me to be playing for this club.

“We are a group of players who work really hard and it’s true, we never give up and today we got our reward for that belief.

“This was a tough game but I think we were good value for the three points and it would have been tough to have come away with only a draw so we are pleased.”

Pellegrini praises Blues' character

Saturday, October 31st, 2015

Manuel Pellegrini was impressed with his side’s strength of character in the dramatic 2-1 victory over Norwich.

The Blues had surrendered a 1-0 lead late on but responded well, netting the winner courtesy of a Yaya Toure penalty.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Chilean asserted City were worthy of the three points, but admitted they had to dig deep to achieve them.

“I think we deserved to win the game,” he reflected. “We started from the beginning to try and score.

“Norwich played very well because they defended very well with 11 players near their box.

“It was very difficult for us to create space but we created three or four chances that we missed.

“Finally, we opened the scoring with a beautiful goal from Nicolas Otamendi.

“Unfortunately, they drew level with a very unlucky goal but in the last ten minutes, the team demonstrated its personality and character.

“We believe in what we can do and we went on to score what was a clear penalty and then miss another.”

On the subject of Norwich’s equaliser, Pellegrini refused to lay blame on goalkeeper Joe Hart or admit disappointment in him.

City and England’s number one was at fault, dropping a looping cross into the path of Cameron Jerome, but redeemed himself with a stunning, crucial save in injury time to thwart Jonny Howson’s deflected effort.

When asked about the Canaries’ leveller, Pellegrini told press: “It was unfortunate. Sometimes, these things happen. Joe is human and he can make mistakes.

“Apart from that error, there were only two shots at him in the game and he saved those because he is a very good goalkeeper.

“We played against a difficult team that played very well.”

Match Report: Swansea 0-3 Arsenal

Saturday, October 31st, 2015

By Rob Kelly at Liberty Stadium

SUMMARY

Olivier Giroud scored Arsenal’s 2,000th goal under Arsène Wenger on the way to a highly-impressive victory at Swansea City.

Both sides created a host of opportunities in south Wales, but it was the France international, compatriot Laurent Koscielny and Joel Campbell who were on target to secure three precious points.

The match got off to a sluggish start, although Campbell – in for his first Premier League start – came close, before Hector Bellerin made a brilliant last-ditch tackle to deny Bafetimbi Gomis.

Giroud wasted a golden opportunity to break the deadlock when he fired high and wide, but he made amends at the start of the second half by heading the Gunners in front.

Suddenly the game opened up as the hosts committed men forwards, and Petr Cech had to be alert to palm away a firm Jefferson Montero effort.

Just as the pressure was starting to build, Koscielny gave the Gunners some breathing room as he forced the ball over the line from close range.

Campbell then capped off a highly-encouraging individual performance when he scored his first-ever Premier League goal after fine build-up play.

These are the sort of games you need to win if you are to challenge for the title – and the Gunners underlined their credentials with a ruthless performance that perfectly sets things up for a big week ahead.

SETTING THE SCENE

Much of the talk in the lead-up to this match had revolved around who would start on the right flank – and it was Campbell who got the nod.

In the absence of Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott, the Costa Rica international was in for his first-ever Premier League start – and just his 15th appearance in Arsenal colours.

Campbell was one of seven changes to the side that had lost to Sheffield Wednesday in midweek, with the likes of Alexis, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla all restored to the starting XI.

Youngsters Matt Macey and Alex Iwobi were named on the bench, while Swansea started with Gomis up front – the French striker who twice scored the winner against the Gunners last season.

FIRST HALF

The game got off to a tentative start, with both sides happy to feel each other out in the opening exchanges – although Nacho Monreal had a sight of goal but dragged his shot wide.

The Gunners soon started to grow into the match, and Campbell came within inches of breaking the deadlock with a brilliant first-time effort that sailed just past the far post.

But the threat Swansea posed was soon writ large when Shelvey played Gomis clean through on a goal with a fine slide-rule pass. The French forward raced on, but hesitated as he went around Cech which allowed Bellerin to slide in and steal the ball of the striker’s foot right in the nick of time.

It was a big let off for the Gunners, who soon found themselves under further pressure as Gomis tested Cech with a firm header from Montero’s cross.

Back Arsenal came, and Giroud had a golden opportunity just before the half-hour as Alexis found him in space in the area, but the France international blazed his effort over the bar.

Campbell threatened again with a snap-shot from the edge of the area, but former Gunner Lukasz Fabianski was equal to it.

SECOND HALF

The Gunners made the perfect start to the second half as Ozil whipped in a corner from the left and Giroud found himself unmarked in the area, diverting his header into the bottom corner.

It was Arsenal’s 2,000th goal under Wenger and could not have come at a better side, as they sought to establish their dominance on a well-contested affair.

But Swansea came straight back at the Gunners, with Cech having to dive full length to palm away Montero’s fizzing effort from the edge of the area.

Arsenal kept the tempo up as they sought to put the game to bed and they had their reward in the 68th minute when Koscielny took advantage of a Fabianski error to force the ball in from close range.

The home fans were not happy, but referee Kevin Friend insisted there was no foul after Koscielny challenged Fabianski in the area, before stabbing the loose ball into the bottom corner.

Campbell then put the seal on a fine individual performance in the 74th minute when he got on the end of Ozil’s ball across the face of goal, took a touch and bent it into the far corner.

It was a fine way to cap a brilliant afternoon’s work for the Gunners ahead of a week that is sure to test them to the limit. But on this evidence, they have nothing to fear.

Live Commentary: Newcastle United 0-0 Stoke City – as it happened – Sports Mole

Saturday, October 31st, 2015

2.02pmHello and thanks for joining me this afternoon at St James Park. Both sides lost last weekend and will be hoping to return to winning ways in the North East today.

2.03pmBefore we delve any further, let’s take a look at the team news.

2.05pmNewcastle United starting XI: Elliot; Janmaat, Mbemba, Coloccini, Dummett; Sissoko, Anita, Tiote, Wijnaldum; Perez, Mitrovic

2.07pmStoke City starting XI: Butland; Johnson, Shawcross, Wollscheid, Pieters; Whelan, Adam; Shaqiri, Bojan Arnautovic; Walters

2.08pmNewcastle United subs: Woodman, Cisse, De Jong, Gouffran, Lascelles, Haidara, Thauvin

2.09pmStoke City subs: Haugaard, Ireland, Wilson, Afellay, van Ginkel, Diouf, Crouch

2.13pmNewcastle have made just one change, as Vurnon Anita comes into the starting XI to replace Jack Colback, who will miss up to six weeks with a knee injury picked up last weekend.

2.16pmThe big news for Stoke City is that club captain Ryan Shawcross makes his first league start of the season. He played in the penalty-shootout victory over Chelsea in midweek and has retained his place today.

2.20pmJon Walters’s goalscoring exploits in the week has seen him retain his place upfront, while Glen Johnson and Erik Pieters regain their places at full-back. Xherdan Shaqiri and Bojan are the other players to come back into the side as Mark Hughes makes five changes in total.

2.24pmBack to Newcastle, who are able to field captain Fabricio Coloccini despite his red card last weekend. He was sent off for a foul on Steven Fletcher, but it has since been overturned.
2.31pmThe Tyne-Wear derby defeat came off the back of Newcastle’s only league win of the season so far and it was a thumping victory. Georginio Wijnaldum scored four goals in a comprehensive 6-2 victory over Norwich City at St James Park, but a week is a long time in football!

2.35pmStoke also lost last weekend and the 2-0 defeat at home to Watford came as somewhat of a shock. The Potters had won three games in a row prior to the loss and were building a good run of form.
2.38pmThere’s still more than 20 minutes until kickoff, so have a listen to Sports Mole‘s podcast previewing today’s game:

2.40pmIf that’s still not enough to whet your appetite, then take a look at the Sports Mole gang having a natter about the game in this video:

2.46pmUPDATE: well, Stoke beat Chelsea in midweek and now Liverpool have become the latest side to condemn Jose Mourinho’s men to more misery. Jurgen Klopp has led the Reds to a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge and here is Danielle Joynson’s on-the-whistle full-time report.

2.49pmSteve McLaren has warned his side that they must take their chances today if they are to take anything from the game. I’m sure he’d love another repeat of the Norwich game a fortnight ago…

2.51pmOne man who has certainly taken his chances in Jon Walters. The forward was linked with a move away from Stoke in the summer, but he scored in midweek and Mark Hughes has rewarded him with a place upfront today. Hughes said a couple of days ago that he does want to keep the Republic of Ireland international.

2.54pmAlthough Mark Hughes has faith in Jon Walters, he has warned his side to expect a backlash from Newcastle today.

2.56pmThe game will start in just a few minutes, so there’s for me to make a fool out of myself with a prediction. There have been 18 goals in Newcastle’s last three matches and I’m expecting more today! I’m going to plump for a 3-1 Stoke victory. Sorry Newcastle fans!

1 minKICKOFF: Here we go! Stoke get us underway in a loud St James Park!

2 minIt’s been a frenetic start! Stoke went immediately down one end, only for Shaqiri to be crowded out and then Wijnaldum’s break was halted by a cynical Johnson foul.

4 minSAVE! It’s a good start by Newcastle and Perez cuts inside from the left flank and sends a low shot towards goal. It’s weak, in truth, but Butland has to drop to his knees to gather.

5 minPENALTY SHOUT! Well, well, well! Bojan squares up Dummett on the far side and skips past him with ease. As the full-back tries to get back, he seems to bundle Bojan over on the edge of the box, but the referee waves play on. Stoke are not happy with the decision!

7 minBojan shows too much of the ball to Sissoko, who leads a Newcastle charge. Stoke get back in numbers, but Wollscheid has to throw himself in front of Mitrovic’s effort to deflect it over the bar.

8 minFrom the corner, Mbemba heads well wide of the near post, but it’s been a vibrant start by the hosts.

8 minI’ve just had a second glance at the Dummett collision with Bojan and the Newcastle man certainly clipped his heels, but the initial contact took place just outside the area.

10 minJohnson’s wayward cross comes all the way through to Arnautovic on the left wing, but he is crowded out by Sissoko and Janmaat, who double up well on the tricky winger.

11 minSissoko flashes a cutback into the area from the byline, but he pulls it behind Mitrovic and Perez. Good approach play by Newcastle, but a poor final product.

13 minStoke are really struggling to get out of their own half. Arnautovic has just sent a wayward cross into the arms of Elliot, who sets Newcastle off on another attack and the hosts win a corner.

15 minIt’s a short corner to Anita, who hits it high over everyone’s head and Mbemba has to make a sliding recovery tackle to prevent Walters from receiving the ball. It’s now a Stoke corner.

15 minJohnson’s far-post header is cut out by Mbemba again at the expense of a second Stoke corner.

16 minShawcross’s looping header gives Elliot a difficult challenge of claiming under pressure, which he does at the second attempt.

17 minCLOSE! Walters comes within inches of giving Stoke the lead! Adam’s teasing cross from the left should be dealt with by Mbemba, but the defender slices at thin air. It catches Walters by surprise, who can’t sort his feet out in time to tap into an empty net. That was a huge chance!

19 minSissoko blasts another wayward pass over the head of Mitrovic as the ball sails out for a throw-in in the right-back position for Stoke.

20 minUPDATE: A reminder that Sports Mole has coverage from the Rugby World Cup final this afternoon and the build-up has already begun here.

22 minMitrovic peels off Johnson and takes a sumptuous first touch before forcing Butland into a good save, but the flag had already been raised. Great footwork from the big forward though.

24 minArnautovic takes a risk by slamming a clearance through his own area, but he gets lucky and it deflects into the path of Walters. Stoke waste the opportunity to break though.

25 minUPDATE: There are no goals in any of the Premier League games after 25 minutes of first-half action.

26 minPerez tries to squeeze it through a gap for Sissoko, but the midfielder gives away a needless foul as he shoves Pieters in the back.

27 minShaqiri nearly works a shooting opportunity after a neat one-two with Arnautovic on the edge of the box, but the ball bobbles off his knee and Newcastle clear.

28 minOFF THE POST! Newcastle are agonisingly close to an opener! Sissoko’s delightful inswinging cross is glanced towards goal by Mitrovic, but the header cannons back off the inside of the post and Wijnaldum is flagged for offside as he tries to scramble home the rebound.

30 minIt’s been an incredibly disjointed opening half an hour for Stoke, which is summed up by two terrible passes by Adam and Whelan.

32 minTiote’s slip on the halfway line is almost capitalised on by Bojan, but Mbemba makes two terrific challenges to bail out his teammate. Superb timing in both of the tackles he made.

33 minMitrovic is as strong as an ox. He holds off the Stoke defender on the halfway line before attempting to pick out a teammate, but the ball hit the referee. However, play has been brought back for a foul on the striker.

35 minMitrovic squares a cross into the six-yard box but Stoke do enough to clear and break, but the move breaks down as Johnson’s heavy touch gifts Coloccini the ball.

36 minWhat a waste. Stoke have Newcastle penned on the edge of their box for the first time in a while, but Adam blasts a terrible shot high over the bar. Incredibly greedy.

37 minIt’s Newcastle with a penalty shout this time as Perez jinks past two defenders with some fancy footwork and snake-like hips before tumbling. Again, nothing is given.

38 minBojan gives away a needless free kick with a deliberate handball and is lucky not to be booked. Perez’s cross from the right evades everyone and Johnson hacks the ball clear.

40 minArnautovic attempts to create something with a left-wing cross, but Bojan – who is well beyond the near post – can’t control and it runs through to Elliot.

42 minSt James Park has been very loud this afternoon, but the noise levels have dropped a little as Stoke have regained a footing.

43 minColoccini’s diving header cuts out Adam’s crossfield ball as Shaqiri looks to escape down the left wing.

44 minAnita’s not having the greatest game and he brings down Bojan on the near side to give Stoke a free kick in a dangerous area.

45 minThe free kick is cleared and Johnson’s subsequent cross is headed well wide of the near post by Wollscheid from 18 yards out.

3.45pmHALF TIME: Newcastle United 0-0 Stoke City

3.46pmThere’s not even any added time, which is just as well because it was a pretty dull first half.

3.47pmBoth sides have had one big chance to take the lead. Walters couldn’t a cross when unmarked from eight yards, but the biggest chance fell Newcastle’s way when Mitrovic’s flick hit the inside of the post.

3.53pmWe’re not the only game without a goal so far though. In fact, the deadlock has only been broken in two Premier League ties at the halfway stage. All the current scores are here.

3.54pmIf rugby is more your thing, then the World Cup final is about to get underway and all the action from Twickenham will be live on Sports Mole here.

3.57pmBefore the second half gets underway, read Tom Nightingale’s half-time report of this game here.

46 minKICKOFF: Newcastle are the team to get us playing in the second half. Will there be a goal in the next 45 minutes?

47 minThe hosts squander possession immediately and Dummett concedes a corner with a sliding tackle on Shaqiri.

47 minIt’s headed clear at the near post though and Newcastle regain possession with a throw-in.

48 minCLOSE! Mitrovic controls a long ball on his chest and lays it off to Perez, who floats inside Johnson and whips a right-footed effort just wide of the far post from 20 yards.

49 minBOOKING: It’s a yellow card for Whelan, who hauls back Wijnaldum 25 yards out. This is a real chance for Newcastle to net an opener. Mitrovic and Wijnaldum are standing over it..

50 minSAVE! Wijnaldum hits the ball and Butland flies high to his right to tip over the fierce dipping effort. It wasn’t in the corner, but it was still an impressive save.

51 minNewcastle flood forward again and Perez wins a corner off the shins of Pieters. it’s taken quickly and Stoke eventually clear.

52 minSAVE! Stoke break in numbers and Arnautovic stands a cross up at the far post for Walters to attack. The forward heads back across goal and Elliot lifts his right hand up to parry the header away!

53 minRoger East calls Mitrovic and Wollscheid across after a bit of handbags between the pair. We’ve seen Mitrovic’s spiky temperament already this season, so he needs to keep his cool here.

54 minSAVE! That’s the best chance of the game! Sissoko plays a one-two with Wijnaldum and is put through on goal, but Butland makes a fine save with his trailing leg to deflect the midfielder’s shot from inside the area over the bar.

55 minCLOSE! Mbemba should do better! The centre-back loses his man at the corner and connects with the ball level with the near post about six yards out, but he gets too much on it and the ball flashes just wide of the near post!

57 minThe second half has begun as the first did – at breakneck speed! Newcastle have had two great chances in a minute to take the lead, but they couldn’t take either. Will that come back to haunt them? (Sorry, I couldn’t resist one Halloween pun)

58 minSAVE! Butland is at full stretch again to push Perez’s 20-yard effort behind for a corner. Stoke’s midfield was bypassed with ease then.

59 minSUBSTITUTION: It’s the first change of the afternoon, as Afellay replaces Bojan. It seems an odd substitution, as Bojan has looked lively, albeit in patches.

61 minCHANCE! Afellay immediately has a chance to make an impact as Shaqiri cuts the ball back to the attacker on the edge of the box, but he scuffs his shot. Walters flicks it on into the arms of Elliot, but the forward was offside.

63 minBOOKINGS: It’s pathetic from Mitrovic. The striker shoves Wollscheid to the floor and then tumbles theatrically as he squares up to the Stoke defender. East deals with the situation well though and dishes out a yellow card to each player.

64 minThe pumped-up forward then bundles Johnson over with a late challenge. It’s only a free kick, but Mitrovic is now treading a very thin line.

65 minShaqiri bamboozles Dummett and reaches the byline, but can only pick out a Newcastle shirt in a good position.

66 minAdam breaks beyond Walters and collects the ball inside the area, but drags a right-footed shot well wide of the far post under pressure.

68 minWell, Mitrovic may be walking a tightrope at Stoke are finding him difficult to handle. Shawcross is lucky to escape a yellow card after hauling the striker back.

69 minShouts for handball as Wijnaldum’s overhead kick is blocked by Wollscheid, but the defender was standing just half a yard away from his opponent.

70 minJohnson tries to pick out Walters with an inswinging cross, but it goes all the way through to Elliot.

71 minSUBSTITUTION: Newcastle make an attacking sub with 20 minutes remaining as De Jong comes on for Tiote. Perhaps McLaren senses a winner for his side?

72 minBLOCK! It’s a sensational block from Pieters! Mitrovic nicks the ball off the fingertips of Butland with a brave header and the ball drops kindly for the striker, who seemingly has the simple task of slotting into an empty net from six yards, but Pieters comes flying in from nowhere to make a miraculous block! Not that it would have counted, as the offside flag had been raised, but no-one knew that at the time!

74 minBLOCK! It’s another block at the opposite end, as Johnson plays a one-two with Walters, but Anita tracked the right-back all the way to throw himself in front of the shot from 18 yards.

76 minWijnaldum has dropped deeper to allow De jong to play off Mitrovic and the Dutchman almost latches on to a Mitrovic flick-on before slipping.

77 minNewcastle have the chance to test Stoke after a clumsy tackle by Arnautovic on Janmaat near the corner flag on the right-hand side.

78 minHowever, Stoke clear and the ball goes all the way back to Elliot.

80 minColoccini flings himself at Arnautovic’s low cross after the winger had collected Shaqiri’s pass on the overlap. It’s a Stoke corner, but a foul is given against Stoke.

82 minSHOT! Shaqiri dinks a pass into Walters, who takes the ball on his chest and swivels, but he fires his effort over the bar and into the crowd.

83 minBOOKING: Arnautovic tops off a poor 10 seconds on his behalf by earning a booking after a cynical trip on De jong. It was all his doing, as he gave the ball away to Sissoko in the first place.

83 minSUBSTITUTION: Lascelles replaces the injured Janmaat with a few minutes remaining.

84 minSAVE! It’s the best save of the lot by Butland, who flings to his left to tip Sissoko’s thunderous strike around the post.

86 minArnautovic, who is on a booking already, sends Mbemba tumbling after the full-back had skipped inside him. On another day, he might have seen a second booking shown to him…

87 minSAVE! Butland has been sensational today! The goalkeeper reacts superbly to tip Lascelles’s thumping header from 12 yards over the bar.

88 minStoke can only clear for a throw-in and Newcastle come forward again to win another corner.

89 minSUBSTITUTION: Hughes decides he can take no more risks with Arnautovic and the winger is replaced by Van Ginkel.

90 minSUBSTITUTION: Hughes chucks on Crouch for Shaqiri for the remaining few minutes.

90 minFOUR MINUTES OF ADDED TIME

90+1 minThe board wasn’t held up for quite a while, but we now know how long is left. Is there time for a winner?

90+3 minBOOKING: Adam picks up a yellow card for a foul on De Jong, who was just about to escape the attentions of his opponent.

4.49pmFULL TIME: Newcastle United 0-0 Stoke City

4.50pmStoke escape with a point, but they have Butland to thank after the goalkeeper made a series of fine saves in the second half to deny Newcastle the win.

4.52pmThe point isn’t enough to lift Newcastle out of the relegation zone, but they do leapfrog Sunderland into 18th place.

4.53pmThat’s all from me today, but make sure to stick around on Sports Mole for plenty of reaction and of course, live coverage of the Rugby World Cup final. Until next time!
